In this Castlefield Stock Story, David Gorman introduces Schneider Electric - the electrical giant that's focused on the transition to clean energy and was recently named the World’s Most Sustainable Corporation.
Over the last thirty years or so, football fans like me have seen a vast improvement in the quality of the stadiums in which to watch our team play. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, opened in 2019, is seen as one of the best in the world and it is to the credit of the football club that it was committed to innovation and the use of the latest technology from the outset. An important supplier to the football club and the stadium is Schneider Electric, a French company whose shares we own in our CFP Castlefield Thoughtful European Fund.
Schneider Electric is a long-established company which traces its roots back to 1836 and it first entered the electricity market in the 1890’s.[1] Over the decades, the company has grown organically and through acquisition. These days, Schneider Electric is a leading global supplier of electrical and industrial automation equipment. The group has four end markets: buildings, data centres, infrastructure and industry, each of which relies on Schneider's products and solutions to make their operations run safely and efficiently. Energy management services, of the type provided to the Spurs stadium, represents around 80% of total revenues, with industrial automation making up the balance. The group's largest geographic markets are the US, China and India and it employs over 160,000 people worldwide.
We’re impressed by the company’s positive approach and it has won widespread recognition for its contribution to a better future through six long-term environmental and social commitments, namely: Climate, Resources, Trust, Equal, Generations and Local.[2]
We’re impressed by the company’s positive approach
At Tottenham, Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure™ platform is designed into the stadium’s infrastructure and provides real-time monitoring for preventative maintenance in areas such as temperature and lighting conditions. The stadium’s electrical infrastructure is monitored from Schneider Electric’s remote field services bureau and the company’s Building Analytics software performs system checks on the stadium every five minutes, up to 60,000 checks an hour. Schneider Electric product experts are also onsite to monitor the stadium’s power infrastructure on match days and in the build-up to special events, such as music concerts or the NFL games it sometimes hosts. With a stadium full of expectant fans, there is no room for error but, by embracing digitisation and automation, the stresses associated with hosting and attending live events are alleviated.[3]
As investors, we really like Schneider Electric’s leading global position in industrial technology and its exposure to attractive growth themes such as automation, digitization and upgrading infrastructure through more efficient energy usage.
We were really pleased to see that Schneider Electric was recently named the World’s Most Sustainable Corporation 2025 by Corporate Knights and it’s the only company to top the Global 100 rankings twice, having already done so in 2021. This fantastic achievement underlines Schneider’s commitment to delivering the best environmental, social and governance performance possible. Compiled by the Canadian media and research company, Corporate Knights, the annual Global 100 index is based on publicly disclosed data related to resources, employees, suppliers, sustainable revenues and investment. Schneider Electric has been part of the Global 100 every year for the past four years and in the top ten seven times — a record for a company in its sector.[4]
pleased to see that Schneider Electric was recently named the World’s Most Sustainable Corporation 2025
The Schneider Electric share price has performed well over the last couple of years, but we expect the company to keep delivering positive returns to shareholders.
