Castlefield Stock Story - Cairn Homes

By James Buckley

In this Castlefield featured stock, Fund Manager James Buckley introduces Cairn Homes, the Irish housebuilder that’s working to develop a more sustainable way to deliver housing in Ireland.

Cairn Homes, held within our Thoughtful European fund and directly amongst our discretionary clients, is a leading Irish housebuilder that’s working to develop a more sustainable way to deliver housing in Ireland.

Cairn’s focus is on building communities in areas where the shortage of affordable family homes is most acute. Sustainability is also an integral consideration in everything they build. With their residential developments, there’s a critical focus on the carbon footprint and water efficiency of the homes they build, and the green space around them for those that live there.

This can be best demonstrated through their Seven Mills development; a new garden town for Dublin offering 225 acres of green spaces – the equivalent of 126 football pitches – and ultimately home to some 25,000 people. The site also encompasses over 12km of cycleways and walkways, plus 3.5km of canal frontage.

We believe Cairn is well-positioned to deliver high-quality, environmentally-conscious homes to a structurally undersupplied Irish housing market.

As part of their Seven Mills development, they’ve also planned for 300,000 square feet of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited commercial space to serve these new communities.

Another way Cairn demonstrates its focus on sustainability, is the use of Nature-based Sustainable Urban Drainage systems (SuDS) which have been integrated into recent developments to control the risk of flooding, and which also protect ecosystems and biodiversity by providing habitats for a range of species.

Cairn is a leading voice to promote sustainability in the built environment, acting as a founding partner of The Supply Chain Sustainability School Ireland, an industry-supported resource that has been established to provide training, extend knowledge and support best practices on sustainability issues in the Irish built environment industry. This initiative also ensures that Cairn’s supply chain partners support the delivery of their sustainability objectives.

Cairn’s science-based short-term decarbonisation targets for Scopes 1, 2 & 3 have been approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and they have further committed to set long-term emissions reduction targets aligning with net-zero - through their Business Ambition for 1.5 degrees C campaign.

We believe Cairn is well-positioned to deliver high-quality, environmentally-conscious homes to a structurally undersupplied Irish housing market.
